Beach Education

     Paekakariki Beach Education
                                                    ( SO MUCH FUN!! )

Thursday 21st November 2013

On Wednesday the 20th of November my class (room 6 )  and room 19 went to Paekakariki beach for beach education. We left at 9am sharp and got on the bus. The bus ride was exciting and full of questions like “ Will the waves be big or will there be no waves at all?” “What are we going to do when we get there?” “ Are we going to have fun and are we going for a swim?” Lots of questions were asked and lots of them answered when we got out of the bus door.

When we stepped out of the bus we were greeted by a nice calm ocean, really friendly lifeguards and a great day ahead of us. The lifeguards took us up to the clubhouse and talked to us about the rules that we had to follow. After we had been told the rules we were split into two groups, one group stayed in the clubhouse and were shown what sort of stuff they use in a rescue or a medical situation. The other group went with Taylor, one of the surf life savers, she showed us round the club and showed us all the boats and canoes that they use. My group went with Taylor first, she taught us lots about what they use and how they use it. She answered any questions that we asked, even if some people asked about sharks and only about sharks. After we had all our questions ask we swapped over. We learnt what a lot of the equipment was used for. It was really interesting knowing what it was used for!! We finished up and had some morning tea.

After the morning tea break we went outside and played some games. The first game we played was seaweed, we played about four rounds of seaweed that we could have played all day. After that we did some rather weird relays. The first relay we did was a normal one but the second one was unusual. We had to wear a rescue tube around us and run up the beach to the other side and give it to the other member of your team. The second relay we had to get a partner and pretend to be saving them while running to the other side. The last relay was the funnest one. We had to wear flippers and a rescue tube. It was really fun but it took forever to finish the relays. After that we came back inside and watched a DVD about how to stay safe in the water. It gave lots of useful information like what you need when you go to the beach and lots of things like that. After we watched  the DVD we stopped for lunch.

After the lunch break we were told that we are going to go swimming but we had to do a few things before we went swimming. They told us how to stay sun safe and how to spot a rip. After we finished  it was time for a swim. We got changed and got swimming. When we first got in it was really cold but after a while it was nice. We were set some challenges that we had to complete. It was a really nice swim. We went swimming for about 45 minutes and in that 45 minutes we had a blast, with the waves coming in ( some of them were really big so we could jump high) that we could ride back to shaw.We all had heaps of fun!! The lifeguards made the circle smaller and eventually there was no circle to swim in. We had to get changed and then said goodbye and thank you to them. The bus came and picked us up to go back to school.

On the ride back we were all thinking how much fun we had all had and whether we are going back some time soon. Some people loved it so much that they thought we should sneak in with another class and go back tomorrow. We learnt a lot from the trip, like how to stay sun smart and look for the right sunscreen, we learnt how to look for a rip and if we do get caught in a rip how to get out of it. That is only a fraction of what we learnt, there is heaps more that they taught us. Lots of kids think that every class in New Zealand should go to beach ed because it will save a lot of lives each year and it is super fun!!

I hope we get to go again next year because you learn so much from it and it is so much fun for the , ummm, 50th time I think but it is truly fun!!

   Surf Safe
On the 20th November room 6 and 19 from Waikanae school went to Paekakariki surf safe visit. To learn how to be safe in the ocean/beach and how to get out of rips.

When we got there  we went up stairs to the clubhouse to take of our bags and our shoes then the live gourds introduced themselves to us. Then we talked about the 5 rules and safety skills. Next we split into two groups room 19 looked at the saftey kit with life guard Ryan and Matt. Room 6 had a tour with lifeguard Tayler.

On the tour we looked at the 4x4 and the irb and all the boards, body boards and others. Then we went Back upstairs to swap places with room 19 so we where looking at the saftey kit and room 19 was on the tour. The medical kit was massive. Next we went down on the beach for some games first we played seaweed and then relay and relay with flippers on.

Then we went back in the clubhouse to have some lunch. Next we got on our togs and some of us wetsuits I got on my wetsuit on .When we got to the water we went for a run and stretched before we went in but while we were doing that the parents formed a circle and we had to swim inside it so we could not go too deep. First we did races with the life gourds and then we could swim we did not have boards. So we just swum the waves after that we got changed and went back on the bus.

That was a really fun for all of us and i hope we do it again.

Beach Education

Beach Education

It was Wednesday the 20th of November and that was when Beach Education was on. I woke up really early, got dressed and did all my chores including feeding the lambs! When I had done all of my chores I got my togs and everything.

When everyone was ready my mum drove us to school, it was almost 9:00 when I got to class and everyone was sitting on the mat with their bags so I did that too. When the bell rang Mr Corlett did the roll and we ran down to the bus with Rm 19 (Rm 19 is the class we went with to Beach Education). When we were in the bus Mr Corlett got me to sit in the back seat with Drenna, Hannah, Jemma, Matarina, Madeline and this boy called Conrad I think and I felt sory for Ioana who had to sit with a boy called Ben Dunbar!

When the bus finally arrived at the Beach we were told to take off our shoes, put our bags on the ground and sit down on the mat so we did. Then the man and the lady introduced themselves to us and talked a bit to us and went over the rules. After that we got split into two groups one group was just room 6 and the other one was room 19. Before we split up my mum arrived and said hi. So room 6 went with taylor the life guard and she took us on a tour of their life guard house it was very cool my favourite part of the tour was when the lady showed us their life saving boat!! When the tour was finished we went back up to the life saving house and waited for max the man to finish with rm 19. So when max the lifeguard was finished he let rm 19 go with Taylor so we could do something with him. When we did find out what we were going to do with him it was half exciting and the half wasn’t so exciting. We had to learn about the survival kit and what they had inside of it. The most disgusting thing in it was the vomit sucker(the vomit sucker clears your throat for any vomit) I absolutely hated that my favourite part was when george volunteered to get strapped up to this board it was funny. Once we were finished with that we got to have some morning tea.

Once everyone had all eaten their morning tea we were told to run outside and wait for the lifeguards and the look out so we did. When the lifeguard arrived we all ran to the actual beach part we got to play about 5 or 6 games of seaweed. Then we played relays in relays two teams had to pair up to make one in my team was Ioana, Zaki, Ben, James, mum and I. In the team that we paired up with was Charlie, Oakley, Tennika, Lucy, Matarina, Jemma and Charlies mum. The first few relays we did was hold onto the lifeguard thing and run down and give it to the next person and my team won once! After that we did something like one person hold onto the lifesaving floatey and the other one was wrapped around it. After that we had to run with flippers and the put a life saving floatey around us (my team got really tight flippers so it took us the longest they were size 4!!).  Once that was all finished we had to go back inside so we all did and we got to watch this really funny lifesaving video and then we got to eat our lunch YAY!!
Once everyone had eaten their lunch we were told to get into our togs and bring our gear outside or into the changing rooms. So once we did we all waited for the life guards at the look out area. After we waited a while taylor said that she would take all the girls for an exercise type thing so max did that too. I thought that the exercise thing was very easy it was just showing us how to run in and out of the water correctly. So the boys got about a five second head start to run into the water before the girls invaded I did one lap around all of the adults and then I got pinched by a crab. so I stayed out for a while and then Mrs feron got me to hold her hand and took me into the deep so I didn’t touch the ground at all I just doggy paddled for the rest of the time.  After we had played in the water for about an hour we were told to get out of the water and go get changed so we did I got changed really quick because there were old people and I could not last another second! At last we took the bus back to school and waited for the bell to ring.

I think that Beach Ed was very helpful and I learnt a lot from it, it is very educational and helpful to people that aren’t aware of what could happen and how. I hope you enjoyed and goodbye for now
THE END!

Waikanae school kids get education at the beach

On Wednesday morning room 6 and room 19 got ready and lined up outside their classroom and walked down to the bus stop and waited for the bus to arrive, when the bus arrived room 6 went into bus first they had to go in the back of the bus to make room for everyone in room 19.

When they all arrived at the Paekakariki club house they went inside and sat down and had to listen to 3 lifeguards.

The children learnt about what to do when your in a rip and how to spot rips . But some of the children already knew what to do when your in a rip. “when i'm in a rip I will swim to the side and swim back to shore or wait for someone” said drenna and lot’s of other kids learnt to swim to the side when they're pulled out by a rip. The way to spot rips is to looking for calm spots where theres no waves so if you go  swimming at the beach do not go swimming in calm spots because it may be a rip.

Then came morning tea which was short. After room 6 and 19 got split up in to parts of two and one group went to get a tour of the club house the other group got to learn about the stuff the use to save lives.

Then children got to discover what the life guards use to save lives. one of the tolls were like tinfoil to cover people to  keep the warmth in there body. “ There was a tool to suck up spu when there was spu in their throat  that couldn't come out the life guards said that the spu tool can be useful.

Then the two groups were combined together for a game of sewed  and then relays that was fun for everyone this is a comet from Hannah Guy “ They were really fun, but quite hard and challenging, but relays was the best fun”

Then came lunch when all the kids finished eating they put on sunblock then went to get changed in there togs.

After the the kids got changed into their togs for a nice cool swim. At first all the children were really cold when they went in the water but then it got warm. The girls had a race which was to race in the water pass the parents (the parents formed a half circle which was the boundary) the boys did that too. then it was just a nice free swim.  Jasmine and Drenna covered themselves with sand to make them look like a pretty mermaid which looked cool, Ioana their friend helped Jasmine cover herself with sand then they covered Drenna with sand. After, the two girls covered with sand jumped into the water. “ It was really cold when we went back into the water” said Jasmine.

After all the kids got changed into their togs they slowly went back to school all tired and sleepy. Lot’s of  the kids said that they had fun in the water.

The End By Jasmine and liezel.

Here are some pictures of the day

The Wrong Day To be Sick.

On Wednesday the 18th of November I was meant to go with my class and some others to beach education but I got sick in the car… On the way to school :-( BOO HOO! So after we dropped my brother off at school my mum went to the supermarket to buy some Ginger-Ale and to the library to get some movies I could watch. The movies she chose were great. But anyway I am meant to be writing to you about what I did when my brothers came back so I will tell you about that. So I got better it just came so fast and went so quick which was good. “Sorry I keep going on so I will skip the part where we pick them up and stuff so… We got on our Togs grabbed our boogie boards and towel and off we went. When we got there, Miller (My Brother) and me dived straight into the water on our boards hoping to catch the best waves. I caught a beauty! It took me all the way up to shore!!!! After we had caught a few waves and had a swim my mum told us to hop onto our boogie boards and she would give us a ride she pulled us right into the deep. The water was up to her chest and we were floating on our boogie boards in the middle of the sea. Then after a little while she lead us back when it got to her waist she let go and we boogie boarded back.
