Kapiti Marae

Waikanae school yr 4 to 6 went to visit a marae called Kapit.

When Waikanae School arrived at the marae. They were greeted onto the grounds by a lady called Bubbles. All the children had to give the college kids a hongi before they entered the wharenui.

When the children sat down in the wharenui where there was a speech that took place which was about the marae. What was said by a tall grown man. All the college kids performed a whaiata.  Then there took place Waikanae Schools speech. What was in mario. After the speech three waikanae school girls led a waiata which all the children joined in after the girls solo.

Then morning tea took place which was provided by the tangata whenua.  While the morning tea was getting eaten the  tangata whenua performed a haka for the guest. Then the children were split into two groups to learn the haka and more about the marae. While one half learnt a small haka the other when to learn more about the marae like how the marae was burnt down by two silly teenagers. After the two groups went to both activities the children were split into six groups to see what group was better at the haka, the group that won got a to share a massive chocolate bar. the group that won had about 30 people in it and they were happy and proud that they won. but also the groups that didn't win were also proud of themselves.

At the end of the session there was a farewell haka while the children hopped on the bus.

This was a great opportunity for the children and hopefully this continues so the kids can experience the mario way of doing things.
