Marae visit.
On friday the 25th of I went with my class and the rest of my syndicate to the kapiti college marae  to learn and experience the maori protocol.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When we got to the marae gateway we were welcomed into the marae with a welcome call. I didn’t understand any of  it but I liked it! When we got to the entrance we had to take our shoes and bag of before heading into the wharenui. First thing was first we had to hongi about 20 kids from kapiti college and then sit quietly and wait.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Then a man did a long speech all in maori known as a powhiri. Then the kids from kapiti college sang us a waiata which is a song. Then it was our turn! Manaaki, Dean and Marcus did a speech in maori!!!! How clever.
Then Grace,Lilly and Ava started off our waiata and we followed. Just before we had our break Matua paora the one who made a speech explained it in english.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We went into the whare kai and had a drink and something to eat to eat before we went out to play on the field. While we ate the college kids did their special HAKA. After playing outside on the field we went inside and split into 2 groups. In the first group I was in we got to learn about the maori carving and their history. Then we swapped over and in the 2 group we had to learn the haka and it was tricky!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yay Lunch! After all the hard work learning the haka we got a break.
I sat down and had my kai. Next up HAKA COMP!!! Ohhhhhh No!!! Well at least we could five minutes to rehearse. I practised then we got i9nto six groups and had the comp. Boo hoo! :-(. We did not win.
I wanted to win because the prize was chocolate!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We packed up and said our farewells and left.
What a great day!!!!
